When one does any task of his/her interest, it enthralls the person so much that the person is lost in it completely. One is said to go into a state of trance at such a point of time.
In such cases one is said to have 'become one' with the job at hand.
But then, as we would have observed at some point of our life or the other, music enthralls one and all. It sways all in its stead. I had the good fortune of being part of such an experience once. Six years ago, my school had organized a 'Cultural Mela'. This had our 'Tabla-Mridanga- Ghata-Vocal' Ensemble to perform a little classical composition formulated by our music professor. It encompassed soft, hard, slow, fast, quiet as well as violent beats of music in each instrument, followed by a vocal chorus of the same.
The notes went round the ensemble from instrument to instrument as we started to blend into the music. Slowly, the chant of drums became waves and we rose and fell with it. A certain while thence, we were lost in the beats; yes, we were physically aware of our hands playing continuously, we could see our parents standing in the crowds ahead, but we were detached. The music played on, as if sustained by a rhythm and strength of its own, and we, though facilitating it, were just spectators.
Though I did not feel the profoundness of this feeling then (of course, I was lost, right?), I realize it now..... Sometimes, I listen to some soulful music before retiring for the day, I unconsciously lose myself in the melody. It's as if two liquids have blent into something perfectly homogeneous.
Going by the theories of Nirvana, or the divine union with the Almighty himself, one's soul is said to meet a greater version of itself when it leaves the earthly body. Then too, the person attaining Nirvana is said to blend into the One power. I associate a similar relation to the meeting of Music and the human soul. I believe the soul meets a greater form of itself, a replica that is omnipresent in nature ab initio, per se. I strongly believe that the human soul meets its alter ego in Music. Therapies use the power of sound to heal human ailments, sound is used to influence the climatic conditions, on a local scale though -with efforts, which can be raised to a global level. All this pervading our surroundings, it seems definitely plausible to consider the fact that sound has the same generative, regenerative and refreshing power that the human soul possesses. Music is indeed, in a way, an alter ego to the human soul...
